Our First Videopodcast: 'My Hectic Day'

Video Podcast
ESL/EFL –Jc’s Video Podcast Series
Lesson 1 “My hectic day”
Juan Carlos Reyes (JC)

1. Description of intended students
My students are in their first year in highschool level in Chile. They are not Esl learners since in Chile there is no any second language to learn in schools, however, every year is more important to know English in order to have a better quality of life in terms of employement and salary. The amount of students in the class is 40 where most of them are not motivated learning English. Moreover, it is difficult to incentivize them due to their family backgrounds, where English is not seen as a tool just as another subject. Since my students are teenagers it is very difficult at that age to motivate them learning another language, so it is a good idea to use video podcast to teach content in an enteresting and different way to traditional instruction.

2. Description of language objectives and content objectives

- Language objectives for series (Lifestyles and Stereotypes)
SWBAT provide detailed descriptions about their own lifestyle and if they belong to a stereotype group.

- Content objectives for series (Lifestyles and Stereotypes)
SWBAT identify the main concepts in ‘Lifestyles and Stereotypes’

- Language objectives for the individual podcast
SWBAT describe their full day using a similar structure like in the video podcast, telling the time and explaining it using frequency adverbs to do it.(Present tense, speaking activity)

- Content objective for the individual podcast
SWBAT tell the time in English in the easiest way; it means using *tranfer language methodology to undertand it better.(*Teach sth similar in both languages through tranfer methodology depending on the students’ level)
e.x. 1:15 → One fifteen = Una quince √
1:15→ Quarter past one ≠ Una quince X

- Explanation of reasoning ; connect with students needs
I made the previous election because students must develop these important objectives because of their level of instruction where it is neccesary. I Think that the information provided in the video podcast is very useful for them because it is really functional to their lives since most of activities have a relation to students’ experiences. Also, I would like to point out that some of the content is surprising for them because it has been recoerden in USA, so it also opens a door to the world where there are different cultures to discover through English.

3. Description of the elements that make the podcast comprehensible
My video podcast has different elements that facilitate the students’ learning, for example, it contains the following concepts focus on multiple intelligences :
-eye-catching, funny and real situations in video that make students to be focus on the lesson
-clear content through visual aids, words and images that support their learning(multimodality)
-music that complements the sense of each situation in the video
-content related to students’ interests(games, sports, free time, etc)
-motivate students to have fun everyday in different ways
- exposure to language in various contexts
- improve listening skills in the class more than conventional methods(relation between situations and words, meaningful)
-repetition of important words in a comprehensible context

4. Descriptions of the strategies that we have covered that have informed the choices that you have made with the podcast and how you will use it with students.
In my video podcast are used teaching strategies that have helped to create a good educational resource. One of the most important is ‘Teaching through content’ because all the video podcast has a meaningful content behind each part of the lesson, it implies the use of enteresting material to make the learning process easier. Moreover, the use of technology facilitates the use of several materials in just one knowledge source. Media in this case are excelent tools to teach in all diffent levels because they give interactive information to work after; so, they help us to students pay attention and learn at the same time through factual events shown in a coherent context. Also it is a good way to apply more strategies like ‘Question and Anwer Method’ to encourage students to participate and discuss about the material provided because they will feel the necessity to say what they are thinking about it; to show their opinions and develop their language skills through social interaction.

Reflection 6:A case of effective language teaching

This teacher always was able to encourage their students giving them oportunities to understand and learn. One of the most used techniques seen in the class was ‘Brainstorming’, it is very useful to embolden her students in order to generate new ideas about a specific topic. In the Esl class, it helps to get a better participation from the students and also to exercise the creativity and problem-solving attitude that they have to develop in their learning process. Moreover, ‘Brainstorming’ methodology doesn’t have just the usual single-answer, so it is always right what students say about the topic. The teacher usually gives multiple-answers questions about prospective activities on the students’ weekends, so they obviously have different plans about it. The main purpose of this approach in this case is to improve their speaking skill, their L2, because the class is the first level and it is vital for them to survive in the US with its language.

Reflection 5:A topic in language education that I want to know more about

My topic is focused on knowing the most effective strategies to use in the classroom, based on research. We have seen in Pasco Highschool that teachers must use just research-based strategies to get good results from their students. I chose this topic because sometimes the role of the teacher is not very well seen by the society, so I think it could be a good way to change it. Moreover, teachers' decisions must have strong basis to explain them in the learning context.

In Chile, the most effective strategies are not so well known, and teachers don't have a very good preparation; in that sense, they just teach in a traditional way without improving their performance in the class development. I would like to know more about those effective strategies used in the classrooms because I want to be an effective teacher in order that my students learn, and consequently they get good academic results.

If teachers want to develop a good work with their students, they need to study about what it's effective and what it is not; thus, they could develop a more professional labor.

Strategies for Effective Teaching http://www.engr.wisc.edu/services/elc/strategies.pdf

Here you can find several techniques such as: PRACTICAL EXAMPLES, SHOW AND TELL, CASE STUDIES,GUIDED DESIGN PROJECTS,OPEN-ENDED LABS,THE FLOWCHART TECHNIQUE, OPEN-ENDED QUIZZES,BRAINSTORMING, QUESTION-AND-ANSWER METHOD,SOFTWARE, TEACHING IMPROVEMENT,FAST FEEDBACK FORM...

All these strategies will help me when starting and developing my teaching career because I will have a good base to develop my classes, and also they will help me to be more confident about my role in the school.

Reflection 4:Websites that might help

My student is Ariel, he is from Cuba, and he has been in the English class just these two last weeks. Ariel knows how important is English for him in order to survive in this country; moreover, he needs to improve his skills in order to participate more in the class as well as the rest of the students who come from other countries, and who also have had to face the cultural shock of living in a completely new environment.
The teacher must use the L1 to make easier their learning; however, it is very difficult for her to know 5 different languages; so, our role as native Spanish speakers must be to facilitate his learning. I chose the following webpage: "The yellow pencil" because it contains meaningful exercises that will help him with Spanish-English lessons for basic-level learners. Here, Ariel will find activities to practice the verb “to be” in this case, and interactive tests to see how much he has improved his knowledge. Also, he will be able to find karaokes and more lessons to become a better student; because what he only needs is using the L2.

Reflection 3: Response to a question about English teaching

Oral skills

by Kate on Sep 28 2008 10:03 AM

Hi, how can I get more students' participation in oral activities in the classroom?

thanks, Kate

http://www.everythingesl.net/askjudie/?i=11029&n=0

Hi Kate,

Sometimes the material provided in books is not much interesting for students, so in that case the role of the teacher plays an important meaning in the selection of the resources that will be part of their learning.

In spite of the fact, you didn't point out the language level of your students. I think that most of the following aspects have conection with all kind of students.

First, it is very important that you are able to find out and know your students’ interests before you create any activity; because this is the most effective way to engage them when they are learning. Moreover, it is significant to know if the year is integrated only by one genre because they have similarities depending on their sex in order to guide yourself at once you make decisions about teaching. Usually, the following topics are their favorite depending on genres:

Men:Sports(Mainly soccer or football in US), video games, technology, internet...

Women: Famous people, shopping, clothing, amazing stories,entertainment...

On the other hand, topics should be focused on their good and bad sides, and so make your students discuss because they will feel the necessity to say what they are thinking about; to show their opinions since maybe the rest of the students think very different; this means that it is better to use controversial issues to encourage them to talk, preferably in higher levels (teenagers). In this aspect, a good example could be to show them visual aids, like images or videos about famous people having uncomfortable situations in their real life so as to ask them about what they would do at that moment, to face their reality.

Finally, If you are going to work with children I would suggest you to show them eye-catching and funny pictures about animals or people in order that they wake up when they watch them. It implies your creativity to generate a story that complete the sense in its context.

I hope you understand the most I pointed out because it is really important to have new ideas when you don't find alternatives to use in the classroom.

Thank you & Good Luck

Jc

(If you want, I will put some material on my blog about what I said here to show how important are visual aids in the oral skills development in school.)

My address is www.juankspace.blogspot.com

I chose this question because I like finding new ways to teach in order to improve our role in the class, and the most important: that students develop their abilities through interactive activities.

Reflection 2:If only the substitute knew…

Social class was not what we expected to see in schools since the teacher in charge couldn’t be present because of unknown reasons, but that was not the problem, it was that there was a substitute that really made me feel disappointed about his role in the classroom. He couldn’t be worse because he never put attention on his students’ needs, he only checked a homework and worked on his own duties. This “teacher” never taught anything; the class was nobody-centered and there was no classroom management to control some misbehaviors, in spite of the fact we were present.
When we are developing language acquisition in our students we must consider that they have to use communicative strategies to improve their learning. The activity didn’t consider multiple intelligences to get good results in this process. The class were not having the “silent period” because students have a good level of English, so there were no excuses to justify the poor activity.
"Acquisition requires meaningful interaction in the target language - natural communication - in which speakers are concerned not with the form of their utterances but with the messages they are conveying and understanding." Stephen Krashen pointed out this important theory about what teachers must do when students are acquiring a second language, but the person mentioned before didn’t practice any technique that implies social interaction to improve students’ learning.

Reflection 1:Podcasting my way to mastery English

I chose English Bites website because it provides several alternatives that help us to know more about different topics of our society in English. These podcasts will be very useful for us as prospective teachers because they contain meaninful content with eye-catching videos that will support our self-learning.
Some themes included in this resource center are related to music, sports, art, animals, etc...The main purpose of this site is to present common terms and english usage focus mainly on intermediate to advanced english learners.
I will work on 1 videopodcast weekly in order to improve my language skills because it is neccesary to get involved with the L2 so as to acquire it effectively.

Working with second language learners, The Classroom Story

Analysis

Stone Fox:
  • Jeff is very hardworking because he focuses all the time on develop an effective teaching to his students, mainly in his SLL.

  • He has high expectations on them,so tehy feel comfortable and confident to their abilities to get the same level that the rest of the students.

Wine Box Sledding:

  • This teacher uses their first language to teach them the L2 through social interaction. Moreover, they get engaged with the outdoor activities what facilitates their learning.

  • "Better than good, Kids communicated with words and body language"

Scene-Setter Visuals:

  • Jeff creates a pre-reading activity associating media(images, videos) with keywords of the book.

  • He aslo paraphrases hard statements to facilitate the learner's understanding.

Power words:

  • Students share their ideas with the teacher about important facts in the book in order to get different points of view.

  • Multimodality is involved.

  • There is a sequence:Summary-Reading-Discussion(Preview/View/Postview)

Spin-off stories:

  • There is a conclusion of the story already connected to real events in the students' lives.

  • Students can develop their abilities through several alternatives in the class using the four skills.

Jeff represents an effective teacher that is worried all the time about his students' needs in terms of learning, because of that it is important to point out that this role is too significant to develop the different students' abilities that make easier their thoughts.

Three Principles of Teaching

Teaching language through content
The teacher´s role implies the use of didactical strategies to facilitate the student learning, because of that it is important to find eye-catching material to manage our classes teaching content not so entertaining commonly for students like grammar. This content must be adapted according to the students´ level, moreover, activities have to be mainly meaninful more than funny because our fundamental purpose is to educate.I consider very important develop my teaching using several resources to fulfill the students´ needs since their multiple intelligences.

Teaching through social interaction
Give oportunities to our students mean that they can work together and consequently improve their learning getting across what they think; it makes them to acquire knowlege in a comfortable environment where they feel free to talk and at the same time are advised individually by the teacher depending on what they need. Furthermore, students are motivated when they interact with people that have similar characteristics, that make mistakes but it doesn´t matter since this communicational situation takes place in a effective and positive climate where mistakes are seen as a source of learning.

High expectations
Students not only need to be taught by teachers but also they need to be supported to get their goals. If a teacher believes in the students´qualities then students will success because they feel more confident when someone helps to improve their performances. In other words, students need high expectations shown by teachers and parents so as to give their maximun effort despite of many other factors that they have to face.Teachers must focus their support based on the students´ backgrounds giving them opportunities to be successful making mistakes but learning anyway without worrying about time, resources, etc.

I believe that we have to see our students as unique people that want to success in their lives improving their social status considering their backgrounds and differences, it implies the following quote:
“We are not teachers of some students, everybody is important in the classroom”; because of that they need several chances to learn and develop their skills, making mistakes and trying many times to understand. That´s why we chose this profession, because we want to change lives!

Faith in the learner expands student potential

Quote "Lack of fluency in English in interpreted as lack of understanding"

This situation is very common in our educational system.Teachers attribute slow fluency process to the students´capacity to understand, however, the problem is that teachers don´t provide good alternatives to learn and sometimes the environment is not the best to develop an appropiate learning.

“Learning English is all about deciding to join the English-speaking club.” Explain what this mean and defend the statement.

It is very helpful to be part of one of this group because interaction is the most important thing to improve fluency and to gain accuracy, but not only you can learn English by doing this, you also can learn by practicing on your own in terms of writing and speaking, in order to develop the different skills. One of the things that you should consider is the level that students have in terms of English because having big gaps between the learners could produce differences in the learning process. We consider that as human being we need to get across what we think and also to share our thoughts.

Gina's social and psychological distance to Spanish language, culture and speakers

1-Social distance: Whose social groups is more dominant?
Gina is involved with a group of spanish native speakers where doesn´t exist a social distance, however, english is the language that is used in all the classes so it could be seen as a barrier to Gina´s desire.

2-Integration pattern: How much do learners integrate, or do they do most things apart from the mainstream?
Gina is ready to learn spanish, however, she is all the time sorrounded by other english speakers and does´t have several alternatives to practice.

3-Enclosure: To what extend does the learner's group have their own resources for interaction, such as church, publications, clubs?
If Gina wants to develop faster her spanish she will practice harder using other media like tv, internet, podcasts, etc

4-Cohesiveness: How much does the group "stick together"?
The chilean students(Gina´s knowledge resource) is tight-knit because they share the same culture unlike Gina that has american culture.

5-Size: How large is the group?
The bigger is the group the harder to learn.

6-Cultural congruence: How are the cultural patterns and customs of the home cultural and the target culture alike or different?
Sadly, to the Gina´s aim there is a big difference between these two cultures(Chilean v/s American) so it could turns more difficult her learning.

7-Attitude: What attitudes do the home and target cultural groups have toward one another?
Gina shows a great attitude so as to learn spanish and the latina culture, because of that it facilitates her purpose. Moreover, she has developed good relationships with the chilean students.

8-Intended length of residence: How long does the learner intended to stay in the new country?
If Gina travels to a spanish speaking country she will facilitate her learning significantly because the language will be used as a tool to get what she wants more than a personal interest to know a new language.

Despite not having good prospects Gina needs to work harder to get her goals learning spanish.

Psychological Distance

• Motivation: Does the learner want to learn the new language?
Gina is completely motivated to learn our culture and obviously spanish.

• Attitude: How does the learner feel toward the target-culture group?
She looks like comfortable in the classroom environment so it makes easier her objective.

• Culture shock: Is the learner suffering culture shock?
Not, because she is living in her country so is not facing that situation.

Knowing our students

Carlos Pacheco Diaz
(Elementary English teacher in Chile)

1)Description of the class background
The students belong to a low social class, most of them do not have economic resourses enough to pay for a private school, they do not have any special expectation in terms of professional training, some of them do not have interest about continuing higher level of education though (college) and work hard to do so, but they do not represent the majority.

2)Student characterization
Javier Gozalez, is one of the best students in the class,he is a very shy boy, and very respectful about the rules of the school. Nevertheless, he can not cope with those students that practice "Bullying" though, this is why some classmates take advantage of this situation and I always have to deal with problems in the classroom, at the moment I am talking to these people who behave badly, and this is going to stop soon.

Analysis
Javier is a chilean student of a semi-particular school in Quillota, in the fifth region in Chile. San Pedro Nolasco is a catholic school where there are no foreign students like in the most schools in contrast to the USA reality. Here we can find the most common environment in this kind of institution, there are few troublemaking students that bully shy pupils but they are not the most. Javier wants to have a good performance in the school geting good grades, because of that he is seen as a boring and silly person due to he spends a lot of time studying. This situation can be explained because of the envy of his classmates or the perception of being a good student. Javier will need to develop his social skills because he not only needs goods grades but also company. On the other hand, the rest of the students need to change their behavior step by step because the family plays an important role in their education.

American schools reality in contrast to chilean ones

Schools in Bridgeport and Brewster

I found that there is a wide gap between chilean and american schools. First, it is important to point out that public education is totally free in US but in Chile you have to pay anyway according to your economic resources, also, environment classrooms are drastically different due to american teachers have the chance to have their own resources and at the same time create a source of knowledge where students can learn by themselves or assisted by a para-professional, however, chilean teachers have to face another reality because they have to change into a different room for every class, so that condition don´t let them personalize each schoolroom owing to each one is used by several teachers depending on their area of education.
I think that we need to change our performance in schools against all the factors that we can´t manage because the students lives are in our hands, because of that i consider very important our disposition to face all those problems that happen in our educational system.

Seattle trip...

I´m sure that have visited Seattle was a great experience for all of us because there are too many interesting places to know that you will never have enough time to know everything. We walked 12 hours so we could see how big Seattle is, in terms of culture and lifestyle. We could see how different people are in contrast with smaller cities. There were lots of cheap stores but the most amazing was to know the Space Needle due to you can see all the city, the ocean, and the beauty of Seattle. On the other hand, nightlife was great because you have different alternatives to have fun and enjoy dancing freely.
I woul like to come back to Seattle but with enough money to live there...(It was a joke)
Here you have some photos of this excellent experience...

CONCERNS WITH COMPUTERIZED ADAPTIVE ORAL PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT

A Commentary on "Comparing Examinee Attitudes Toward Computer-Assisted and Other Oral
Proficient Assessments" by Dorry Kenyon and Valerie Malabonga
John M. Norris
University of Hawai`i at Manoa

Language Learning & Technology May 2001, Vol. 5, Num. 2
http://llt.msu.edu/vol5num2/norris/default.html
pp. 99-105

Summary

The relevant advantages given by technology to our society not only in educational instruction but also in assessment show us how to improve our teaching. In this article by John Norris was developed some concerns about the computarized adaptive oral proficiency assessment and the evaluation of CBTs, Computer-Based Tests like SOPI and COPI being this last one the best evaluated according to Norris who considered important the followings characteristics:
COPI gives to the CBTs technical innovations like the change of audio formats to digital one that let us work on instant repetitions, listening parts, particular segments or the whole of a track.
It lets to examinees control their time used in planning and responding tasks to improve their oral performance.
COPI is more efficient on administration and scores because it introduces technology to catch affectiveness in the response time according to the topic .
It uses an algorithm for the selection of the test items.
Lets the examenee choose his/her level for tasks

Although it is very difficult to score speaking performances through computer-based tests because it is not clear if they do what teachers want to assess, we have to consider the improvements that they give us and focus on our specific purposes and under what circunstances we should use them to fulfil our pedagogycal expectations.

Comments

Students need to develop their skills through technology and that situation implies a better teachers preparation, because of that its is important to learn about these technological advantages that make us easier to obtain our aims. Speaking tests usually are hard to evaluate because there is not enough time to all our students, affectiveness can change the results and teachers coud be subjective according to their feelings.
Finally, teachers need to make a good use of technology because our education demands a change in our culture because of globalization in order to get a better society.

THE INTERNET AS A GLOCAL DISCOURSE ENVIRONMENT
A Commentary on "Second Language Socialization in a Bilingual Chat Room" by Wan Shun Eva Lam and "Second Language Cyberhetoric: A Study of Chinese L2 Writers in an Online Usenet Group" by Joel Bloch
http://llt.msu.edu/vol8num3/koutsogiannis

Summary:
The big impact produced by the Internet to the society shows how to our communication changes everyday. First,it is important to point out that many local cultures are exposed to the globalization and obviously to a second language when they interact with other people. Some researches give us three important characteristics about this important tool:
Internet resources develop an informal learning environment for English as a L2.There is a sense of fluency and literacy practice where a new language is used very different from school.
It is created a discoursive space where people develop an identity and also negotiate their relationships according to their personalities.
Can be seen as a space where languages are mixed or considered as hybrid language varieties.

Comments:
As prospective teachers we need to know how useful could be Internet in the classroom, its benefits and drawbacks.Because of that, students can chat on the net fluently but in a new kind of language, shorter and with symbols. So, our function has to be guide our students to learn how to improve their language and discover new people using their L2 to get their ideas across. The most important aspect of this research is to understand that there are different cultures that want to say something to the world using their own language, however, English plays an important role because of its universality and usefulness.

The american dream of 15 chilean students

The opportunity to study abroad not only implies the improvement of our skills as future English teachers but also to learn about a new culture just seen in books or shown on Tv programs. One of the big differences in Usa is the education of its population that most of times show respect to the other human beings and mainly to the nature. This is very important for me because it is necessary to grow all together as society in order to get a better lifestyle. However, there is a big difference in digestive disorders due to there is not a wide variety in terms of healthy food in almost everywhere you go.Because of that I think that there are lots of fat people here that have to spend more money if they want to eat better.
