Our First Videopodcast: 'My Hectic Day'

Lesson 1 “My hectic day”

1. Description of intended students
My students are in their first year in highschool level in Chile. They are not Esl learners since in Chile there is no any second language to learn in schools, however, every year is more important to know English in order to have a better quality of life in terms of employement and salary. The amount of students in the class is 40 where most of them are not motivated learning English. Moreover, it is difficult to incentivize them due to their family backgrounds, where English is not seen as a tool just as another subject. Since my students are teenagers it is very difficult at that age to motivate them learning another language, so it is a good idea to use video podcast to teach content in an enteresting and different way to traditional instruction.

2. Description of language objectives and content objectives

- Language objectives for series (Lifestyles and Stereotypes)
SWBAT provide detailed descriptions about their own lifestyle and if they belong to a stereotype group.

- Content objectives for series (Lifestyles and Stereotypes)
SWBAT identify the main concepts in ‘Lifestyles and Stereotypes’

- Language objectives for the individual podcast
SWBAT describe their full day using a similar structure like in the video podcast, telling the time and explaining it using frequency adverbs to do it.(Present tense,speaking activity)

- Content objective for the individual podcast
SWBAT tell the time in English in the easiest way; it means using *tranfer language methodology to undertand it better.(*Teach sth similar in both languages through tranfer methodology depending on the students’ level)
e.x. 1:15 → One fifteen = Una quince √
1:15→ Quarter past one ≠ Una quince X

- Explanation of reasoning ; connect with students needs
I made the previous election because students must develop these important objectives because of their level of instruction where it is neccesary. I Think that the information provided in the video podcast is very useful for them because it is really functional to their lives since most of activities have a relation to students’ experiences. Also, I would like to point out that some of the content is surprising for them because it has been recoerden in USA, so it also opens a door to the world where there are different cultures to discover through English.

3. Description of the elements that make the podcast comprehensible
My video podcast has different elements that facilitate the students’ learning, for example, it contains the following concepts focus on multiple intelligences :
-eye-catching, funny and real situations in video that make students to be focus on the lesson
-clear content through visual aids,words and images that support their learning(multimodality)
-music that complements the sense of each situation in the video
-content related to students’ interests(games,sports,free time,etc)
-motivate students to have fun everyday in different ways
- exposure to language in various contexts
- improve listening skills in the class more than conventional methods(relation between situations and words, meaningful)
-repetition of important words in a comprehensible context

4. Descriptions of the strategies that we have covered that have informed the choices that you have made with the podcast and how you will use it with students.
In my video podcast are used teaching strategies that have helped to create a good educational resource. One of the most important is ‘Teaching through content’ because all the video podcast has a meaningful content behind each part of the lesson, it implies the use of enteresting material to make the learning process easier. Moreover, the use of technology facilitates the use of several materials in just one knowledge source. Media in this case are excelent tools to teach in all diffent levels because they give interactive information to work after; so, they help us to students pay attention and learn at the same time through factual events shown in a coherent context. Also it is a good way to apply more strategies like ‘Question and Anwer Method’ to encourage students to participate and discuss about the material provided because they will feel the necessity to say what they are thinking about it; to show their opinions and develop their language skills through social interaction.
